Dr. Raleigh Butler received his Bachelor of Medicine; Bachelor of Surgery Degree from the University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica after being awarded a scholarship by Bahamas Supermarket. In May of 1990 he was awarded his Membership into the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynecologic, UK. He then served as the Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecologic in Freeport Grand Bahama, at the Rand Memorial Hospital. He soon became aware of the paucity of oncology services within his beloved country and was inspired to pursue career in that field.

In order to enter the competitive realm of subspecialization, He was awarded a Commonwealth scholarship where he joined Professor Campbell’s research team at the University of Southampton in England focusing on molecular genetics in specific the genes that may be used as indicators of gynecological malignancies. He co-authored several publications during that period including “Loss of Heterozygosity on chromosomes 4, 5, 9, and 11 as a feature of cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia and cervical carcinoma tumor genesis He was awarded his MD thesis from Southampton University for this work. He has continued this focus at home and has worked on the “Prevalence of HPV serotypes in HIV patients in the Bahamas.

On leaving Southampton, he worked at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Newcastle, England before transferring to the Princess Margaret and Sunny Broke Hospitals at the University of Toronto, Toronto Canada where he completed his fellowship in Gynecology Oncology in 1999.

Since returning to the Bahamas he has served in the capacity of Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Consultant in gynecology oncology at the Princess Margaret Hospital, Nassau. He serves as a member of the national group for cervix cancer prevention in the Bahamas, a member of the Pan American Health Organization cervical cancer working group for the Latin America and Postgraduate Program Director for Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of the West Indies Nassau Bahamas. He is an active member and cochairmen for Gynecologic Oncology in the African American Consortium. He is chairman of Caribbean section at the RCOG and President Elect of The Caribbean Gynecologic Cancer Society. He is also an active member of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology in USA. Canada, UK, and European Cancer Societies.

His research interest includes, screening for cervical cancer via visual inspection of the cervix, endoscopic surgery in early endometrial cancer, cervical cancer and HIV, and neoadjuvant chemotherapy for ovarian cancer. He has Author’s text book chapters and has several publications related to cervical dysplasia, HPV and HPV vaccine knowledge and attitudes. He has been a part of the team that has developed national protocols in the area of colposcopy. He is still involved with a number of research projects locally and internationally
